As those who have been following DC’s Infected storyline might know, Sky Tyrant has been swarming the pages of recent Hawkman comics. The evil past life of Carter Hall hails from Earth-3 and is obsessed with violence purely for the sport. The comics’ next issue will mark Hall’s last stand at fighting off the evil alter ego that has taken over control of his body. However, Sky Tyrant might not be the spookiest version of the winged hero.
Hawkman #23 will revisit yet another one of Hall’s past lives, this time, as a plague doctor during the 17th century in Europe. This version of Hawkman is cloaked in black with a hawk-inspired plague doctor mask. He also wields the signature mace, according to the cover by Mikel Janín.
Unfortunately, this version of Hawkman is not beloved in his doctoral role. Since he is immune to the plague, his patients and fellow citizens both hate him for his fortune and fear him for his mystery. This past life’s level of misery and suffering could be what’s necessary to go toe-to-toe with Sky Tyrant’s senseless acts of violence, but only time will tell. This 17th-century Hawkman is not the only past life to make an appearance in the duel between Carter Hall and Sky Tyrant. Recently, Titan Hawk emerged onto the scene as the biggest Hawkman yet, standing about the size of a skyscraper.
Sky Tyrant himself came into play recently at the hand of the Batman Who Laughs, who infected six DC heroes and brought out their villainous alter egos. With the Batman Who Laughs controlling the operation lately, somehow a Black Plague doctor doesn’t seem as intimidating as he might have without months of twisted build-up, but it will be curious to see how this past life factors into the defeat of the tyrant who is in control of Carter’s body for the time being.
