Bona fide action star Keanu Reeves may have joined one of the biggest action franchises in the world, as he reportedly has a role in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Universal’s high-octane franchise originally just started out with street racing, but it has evolved to become something much bigger. This has partially been the result of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson joining the franchise in Fast Five as Luke Hobbs, and the response to him has led to larger roles in every subsequent appearance.
After making four appearances in the main franchise, though, Johnson is now getting the star treatment with Hobbs & Shaw. It is the first spinoff film to arrive in the franchise and will pair Johnson up with Jason Statham’s villain-turned-ally Deckard Shaw. The film boasts an impressive cast that pits the two veterans of the Fast & Furious world up against Idris Elba’s superhuman/cyborg foe Brixton, and the trailers have shown just how epic their clash could be.
According to a new report from That Hashtag Show, another threat may be hiding behind the shadows of Hobbs & Shaw and is reportedly going to be played by Keanu Reeves. Full details on Reeves’ role in Hobbs & Shaw have not been revealed, but he is believed to be tied to Brixton and could return for potential sequels. This means Reeves is not expected to have that much screen time in the film, instead being a late introduction (possibly even in a post-credits scene), so fans shouldn’t expect to see Reeves actually go toe-to-toe with Johnson and Statham just yet.
If this report is true, the pairing of Reeves with the Fast & Furious franchise could be the fulfillment of something many have dreamed about seeing. He previously conquered the genre thanks to movies like Point Break and The Matrix, but he came back in a major way with John Wick. He is about to star in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum this summer and is the type of addition that would generate even more excitement for the future of the Hobbs & Shaw spinoffs. While this report hasn’t been confirmed, director David Leitch was the co-director on John Wick, so he already has a connection to Reeves to make this pairing possible.
The possible addition of Reeves in Hobbs & Shaw would also make him the latest major star to join the franchise overall. The Fate of the Furious saw Charlize Theron join, and Hobbs & Shaw found a talented cast of its own. Not only will Johnson, Statham, Elba, and now Reeves appear, but the film also includes Mission: Impossible - Fallout breakout Vanessa Kirby, Baby Driver’s Eiza Gonzalez, and WWE star Roman Reigns. If Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw performs as well as Universal is hoping, then the sequel could feature many of these characters returning to do battle with Reeves.
